All ships need maintenance and repairs. Many repair and maintanance operations can be performed at sea or by the crew in port. Complicated or large-scale repairs might require the ship to be removed from commercial operation. Classification Society supervision is required for most large-scale repairs, particularly those carried out in a ship repair yard.

One the ship is built and launched, It goes into operation for the next 20 to 25 years. During which the ship has to be maintained well.

Ship maintenance and repair is an equally big industry and a large workforce is involved in this globally.

Ship Production

Fabrication :

Plates are cut and bend to required shape. With these plates and stiffeners other panels and sub assemblies are fabricated. Sub assemblies are welded together to form blocks. These are then moved to slipway / Dry dock and join to form ship which is then floated out.

Launching :

Process of transferring the ship from land into water. From slip way of DD. End on , side launch or flooding

Outfitting:

Fitting of equipment, system pipelines, electrical cables etc. All systems inter connected, tested tuned
